THIRD PERIOD UPDATE
Alexandre Mallet and Jonathan Lavoie added third-period goals as the Oceanic skated away with an 9-0 victory. Final shots were 39-30 for the Oceanic.
The series resumes with Game 6 on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Metro Centre in Halifax.
SECOND PERIOD UPDATE
The Oceanic are pouring salt in the Mooseheads’ wounds on national television.
The Oceanic padded their 3-0 first period lead by scoring four more goals in the second period and are now up 7-0.
Mooseheads goaltender Zach Fucale made a handful of terrific saves in the first half of the second period to keep his team in it before things unravelled.
The Oceanic scored four times in 5:03 starting with Jean-Philippe Mathieu’s power-play goal at 11:04. Francis Beauvillier scored shorthanded at 13:17, Petr Straka at even strength at 14:26 and Jerome Gauthier-Leduc at 16:07.
Although Fucale had little defensive support, he was pulled after allowing six goals on 24 shots. Marc-Olivier Daigle took his place.
The game is being televised on Rogers Sportsnet. The Mooseheads lost 7-4 to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in their last Sportsnet game, and have now allowed 11 goals in their past three periods on national TV.
The Oceanic have a 29-20 edge in shots after 40 minutes.
FIRST PERIOD UPDATE
The first period couldn’t have gone worse for the Mooseheads.
Not only did they allow three goals to fall behind 3-0, they’ve lost captain Cameron Critchlow to a game misconduct for trying to take Jonathan Lavoie’s helmet off in a fight with 2:23 left in the period.
With the sold-out crowd already roaring, Oceanic forward Peter Trainor opened the scoring just 1:50 in when he fired a shot through heavy traffic that goaltender Zach Fucale never saw.
Jean-Francois Plante added to Rimouski’s lead at 6:50 when he beat Fucale cleanly by teeing up a slap shot from the inside of the left faceoff circle at 6:50, while Scott Oke made it 3-0 at 13:43 when he tapped in a pass from the corner from Petr Straka.
The Mooseheads out-shot the Oceanic 13-11. Rimouski goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard made several solid saves, including one with his blocker on Ryan Falkenham on a two-on-one and several others on two Mooseheads power plays.
The Mooseheads will get a big boost from the return of winger Brad Cuzner. The 19-year-old penalty-killing standout has missed the past five games with an upper-body injury after taking a high stick from Quebec Remparts forward Gabriel Desjardins in Game 6 of the quarter-finals.
Cuzner bumps Alexandre Cote from the lineup and will skate on the fourth line with veteran Travis Randell and rookie Ryan Falkenham.
The Mooseheads have also adjusted their second and third lines, moving Andrew Ryan into the left-wing slot with centre Brent Andrews and right-winger Alexandre Grenier. Boudreau slides into the centre spot between Darcy Ashley on the left and Martin Frk on the right.
