Handout The iOS version of Pitfall! is more Temple Run than it is an updated version of its namesake.

What is it about?

The iOS version of Pitfall! is supposed to be an updated imagining of the original Atari 2600 classic. Although, in actual practice it’s more a version of Temple Run than it is of the original Pitfall!. You run, jump, slide, turn, and even ride a motorcycle using touch and flick gestures in an attempt to get the highest score possible.

Why is it fun?

This version of Pitfall! is hopelessly addicting. I found that once I got into a groove I couldn’t stop playing. There are always enough obstacles that it feels challenging, but never too many that it feels intimidating. I especially like the fact that there are checkpoints where you can continue your run even after dying.

Why should you play it?

I’m not a fan of in-app purchases being used to advance progress, while us non-paying players must repeat the same level over and over to acquire the same amount of treasure. That said, I still really enjoyed the game, even if it is more Temple Run than original Pitfall!. If this is the kind of thing that interests you, then Pitfall! won’t fall short.

Score: 4/5

Pitfall! is available to download for iPhone and iPad for $0.99.
