When I entered Gasthaus Gutenberger, I felt like I had left Winnipeg and stepped into Bavaria. Wooden furniture, vignettes of monks making beer and the German hinterland combined with volksmusik on the intercom and my cheerful Bavarian server, all transported me to Deutschland.
Ravenous, I ordered the veal Wiener Schnitzel ($16.95) garnished with lemon, capers and parsley with a side order of homemade spaetzle and sauerkraut. My schnitzel was tender, crisp and spiced with a good dusting of pepper. By combining the schnitzel with the tangy smokiness of the bacon-speckled sauerkraut and the buttery softness of the spaetzle, I found myself in heaven. The one small critique I would have is that the cook forgot to add the capers.
I finished my meal with a crispy Apple Strudel ($5.95) flecked with rum soaked raisins and a crème englais on the side.
I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant and recommend it to anyone wishing to try authentic German cuisine.
