Since one of my favourite shows is Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, I decided to get my “Guy on” and visit C. Kelekis, a Winnipeg institution for more than 70 years.
The diner had the requisite lunch counter but what really killed it was a Sardi’s-esque homage to celebrities, such as Pierre Trudeau and Nia Vardalos, and an orange mural emblazed with the history of the restaurant and the Kelekis family. This place was so retro it’s cool.
To practice my diner-ese, I ordered a Coney Island chicken and a “chewed with fine breathe accompanied by pigs.” For those of you not familiar with the lingo, that’s the Hot Dog ($4) and Hamburger with onions and bacon ($4.75), respectively.
Both were tasty fares as were the accompanying homemade shoestring fries. Despite the fact that Isabel’s Rice Pudding ($4.50) and the apple pie ($4.25) were dismal, I thoroughly enjoyed this little diner.
Now the question is how do I get my picture up on that wall?
