For $8.26 you can ask for a burrito, fajita, taco, bowl, salad or quesadilla. Fill it with pork, beef, chicken, vegetables or fish, and finish it with salsa, sour cream, lettuce and more.

The friendly owner’s description of his pulled pork convinces me to try it — slow cooked in banana leaves with chilies and annatto paste. It’s served in a burrito — a large tortilla — along with black beans, green salsa, grilled veggies, green onions and lettuce. Delish.

My friend goes for the tacos — three soft-shelled tortillas. In one she has baked fish, in another vegetables, and in the last slow-cooked spicy beef. She requests several toppings including sour cream, lettuce and guacamole.

There are daily specials, but disappointingly this day’s shrimp ceviche is gone.

Fresh, flavourful and fun, Cantina Mexicana is a welcome addition to the downtown lunch scene.
