Ever since it was announced that Calgary will play host to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the city has been abuzz about what the Royal couple will be doing with their time in our city.

After all, with summer now officially in full swing, there is undoubtedly lots to do and see. So when William and Catherine’s itinerary was announced earlier this week, I’m sure I’m not the only who thought, “Who on earth planned their trip?” and more specifically, “Why did they make it so boring?”

With so many things to do in this awesome city, I’m worried that William and Catherine are going to think that we’re as dull as Regina.

Just because William is royalty, it doesn’t mean that we should ignore the fact that he also just turned 29.  We’re the same age and if you told me that I had to unveil a plaque and tour a centre of research and innovation projects for four hours, instead of having a beer on a 17th Avenue patio, I would probably just stay on the plane.

Where is the enjoyment?  Where is the excitement? Are they really not going to get to float down the Elbow River?  Why invite them all the way to Calgary and not let them have a little fun? And no, I don’t consider a sit down with the prime minister fun, though Stephen Harper does get points for finally visiting his riding. I guess all it took was a royal visit … with the promise of a potential Pippa sighting.

To be fair, the royal visit isn’t all boring.

The couple will be exploring our zoo, but not to see a break-dancing gorilla. Nope, instead we are treating the 20-somethings to a very exciting environmental preservation display! No wonder Harry doesn’t seem to be too upset about not being next in line for the throne.

Speaking of Harry, remember the last time he visited Calgary?

Now there’s a prince who knows how to have a good time! While the location of our city’s most famous bar may have changed, I’m guessing Wills is all too familiar with his brother’s night at Cowboys, which resulted in tabloid covers around the world. How could the future king not want to visit the bar where his brother so famously “tipped” Cherie the waitress?

Don’t worry, I’m sure unveiling a plaque is just as exciting as hooter shooters.
