New Year’s resolutions can be great ways of getting your life back on track, whether you make them in time to ring in the new year or let them percolate a while longer.

Since I rarely have success with my own resolutions, I’ll do what columnists do best: I’ll offer unsolicited advice on how others should shape their 2012.

The Calgary Parking Authority: Be better; be nicer. Is there a less-friendly collective in Calgary? I’m frustrated that we as Calgarians are forced to deal with their comically high prices and depressingly rude employees. We aren’t using their spaces because we approve of their business practices, but rather because there are few viable alternatives. Until there are, the Calgary Parking Authority needs to appreciate that they’ve got a pretty easy ride and stop taking us for one.

Inglewood: Stay open longer. The charm of one of Calgary’s oldest neighbourhoods is undeniable. I just wish I could visit it more. It seems like whenever I do, it’s closed for business. While I wish I had the appetite to eat supper at 3 p.m., or the ability to shop for clothes after lunch, having a full-time job often impedes these practices. Inglewood should take a chance and extend its hours.

Wind warnings: Less is more. Once, once we had a windstorm that caused extensive damage. Of course, ever since November’s random occurrence, we’ve been inundated with pointless wind warnings. Maybe it’s because I’m bald, but a wind warning doesn’t really affect the rest of my day. The constant warnings will soon lose their meaning because, if anything, they cause more concern than the wind itself.

Naheed Nenshi: Sleep. I’ve never been a mayor before – I did once run for student council and placed a solid fourth -but if I was, I’m sure I’d want to be everywhere, too. However, more than 14 months into your term your approval ratings continue to climb. We get it: You’re well-liked. You’re popular. Now go to sleep. You must be exhausted. I’d hate for people to start thinking that your exhaustion might affect how well you do your job. After all, there are only 24 hours in a day but there are countless critics who are always waiting for you to screw up.
