The Halifax Mooseheads made a big move Monday as the QMJHL’s trade window winds down.
The Mooseheads acquired 17-year-old defenceman Matt Murphy and Sherbrooke’s second round pick in 2014 from the Val-d’Or Foreurs. In return, Halifax ships blueliner Randy Gazolla to the Foreurs, along with Quebec’s first round pick in 2014 and the Mooseheads first round pick in 2015.
Murphy, the fifth overall pick of the Foreurs in the 2011 draft, the same draft that saw Nathan MacKinnon go No. 1 in and Jonathan Drouin two, had a goal and 24 points in 40 games this season. Like MacKinnon and Drouin, Murphy also played for Team QMJHL in the 2012 Subway Super Series against Russia.
Gazolla, 19, is a dependable blueliner, who had five goals and 20 points in 39 games.
The QMJHL trade period wraps up Tuesday at 1 p.m.
