Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf and Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert announced their wedding engagement to surprised family and friends over a P.E.I. lobster dinner Sunday night.
“They’re good customers, we’re honoured that they chose our restaurant,” said Karl Nickelson, manager of the New Glasgow Lobster restaurant in P.E.I.
The Canadian couple, who began dating in May 2008, invited 35 friends and family to the restaurant. No one knew about the engagement before dinner, but screams and applause could be heard coming from a private dining room after the couple broke the news.
Cuthbert and Phaneuf often spend the summer in an oceanside home in New London, P.E.I., and frequent the New Glasgow restaurant, known for its fresh, local lobster. Guests celebrated the engagement by cracking into at least 20 of the buttery crustaceans.
Servers couldn’t help but notice Cuthbert’s mammoth, diamond engagement ring.
“They said it was pretty huge,” said Nickelson.
Cuthbert, 29, may be best known for her recurring role in the long-running TV show 24, as character Jack Bauer’s daughter, Kim, and is currently starring in Happy Endings.
She has also appeared in many movies, including Old School, The Girl Next Door, Love Actually and House of Wax. She kicked off her career on the Canadian television show Popular Mechanics for Kids.
Phaneuf, 27, is entering his third season as captain of the Maple Leafs.
