No one was injured after a car broke out into flames while being driven near the corner of Portage Avenue and Main Street—right in the middle of rush hour traffic—Thursday.
The 18-year-old driver of the silver 2003 Volkswagen Passat, who identified himself as Sage, told Metro he’d been driving south on Main Street shortly before five when the engine suddenly burst into flames.
“Something exploded in the engine and it just started on fire,” he explained just minutes later. “I was out of there in a couple seconds.”
The car sat just north of the intersection for just a few minutes as high winds fanned the flames higher before fire crews arrived and put the fire out.
Sage, who is a student, told Metro the Passat was his first car and he’d bought it just two months ago.
