Winnipeg councillor Harvey Smith underwent surgery for a broken pelvis Wednesday after he slipped and fell at the corner of Market Avenue and Main Street.
“You want to know the crazy thing?” asked fellow councillor Ross Eadie. “No one stopped to help him. There were all these cars driving around him and no one stopped to get out and help him.”
Eadie said a city hall employee standing outside having a cigarette break recognized him and helped him off the street.
The fall happened Tuesday afternoon while Smith and Eadie were handing out pamphlets outlining their protest against a proposed 20-cent transit fare hike.
Eadie said Smith is in good spirits and his doctor thinks his recovery time will be short. “Harvey is quite active,” said Eadie. “And because he’s so active the doctor thinks it’ll just be a matter of weeks.”
Eadie said Smith is determined to make it to the Feb. 22 council meeting to vote down the fare hike.
