The windows in the Gault Building on Arthur Street need preserving, says Artspace executive director Randy Joynt.

A building in Winnipeg’s Exchange District will have an opportunity to preserve a window to the past.

The Gault Building on Arthur Street will see a $22,000 investment from Parks Canada to draw up a plan to preserve the historical building’s windows.

Currently the home to Artspace, executive director Randy Joynt said there are 142 windows in the building, and all of them need attention.

“The way the windows were designed, they’re actually very energy efficient,” said Joynt. “I don’t think we could do any better in terms of energy efficiency.

“All of them are suffering from age. Some of them are drafty, some don’t operate properly.”

Artspace will spend a total of $44,000 to draw up the plans, and estimate the costs of repairing and conserving them properly.

Joynt said because the Gault Building is designated historical, they can’t simply remove the windows and replace them.

“(The windows) not only contribute to the character of the building, but really to the character of the Exchange District.”

The Gault Building was built in 1900, and some of the windows are original.
