Winnipeg police detonated a package found in a car after an accident Monday morning.
The Winnipeg Police bomb squad was called in after emergency responders found a suspicious package at the scene of a collision in the Portage Avenue and Strathcona Street area.
All westbound lanes on Portage Avenue at Valour Road were closed, as were all Portage Avenue eastbound lanes at Empress Street. Officials were on site for several hours.
Two men, aged 47 and 39, were taken to hospital in stable condition after the collision.
Police at the scene told Metro Winnipeg the accident happened after a black Mistubishi two-door car was speeding westbound on Portage Avenue and collided with a GMC Jimmy trying to turn onto the street from Strathcona. Police said the package was found in the black car and resembled a pipe bomb.
The package was detonated safely in the middle of the road.
Police reopened Portage Avenue to traffic at about 10:45 a.m. The driver of the Mitsubishi received a ticket for driving imprudently.
