A youngster gnaws on a sandwich before Fred Penner comes out on stage at Kidsfest.

Kidsfest is in its 29th year and is better than ever, with a mix of music, magic, artistry, acrobatics and fun.

The festival, which happens every year at the Forks, is running now until Sunday and includes acts and sights for children of all ages – and for adults of all ages, too.

Brenda Weir took in Fred Penner at Kidsfest on Thursday morning and said she was “technically” there for her son, Braydon, 4, but couldn’t pass up seeing a childhood hero.

“Everyone I know loves Fred Penner,” said Weir. “Everyone knows songs like The Cat Came Back, and now I get to sing it with my son.”

Indeed, Tent A was filled to the brim with dozens waiting outside while the Manitoba children’s performer took to the stage to cheers and applause – the loudest from the parents.

“It’s nostalgic,” said David Rempel, who was there with his twin girls, Melissa and Ashley, 3. “And it’s cool to hear the new songs that he’s done since my day.”

The festival includes more than music, with crafts, games, balloons and booths lining the area in front of Scotiabank Stage.
