The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the death of a 22-year-old Windsor man who died in police custody Thursday morning.

Windsor police responded to a call around 11a.m. on Jacobs Drive about a man who was acting strangely.

An officer arrived on scene and found the man, who was having difficulty breathing. The officer placed him in a recovery position. The man stopped showing vital signs shortly after another officer arrived to assist.

The man was pronounced dead after paramedics transported him to hospital.

The SIU – an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police in the case of death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault – has assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.
