Trapped in a corner with no car to escape in, an alleged car thief hid under the blanket to hide from police.
The suspect was first spotted on the road in a stolen car Monday morning at Bridge Street and Gorge Road East. When police attempted a traffic stop, the 26-year-old suspect allegedly reversed into one of the police cruisers, damaging its front bumper and headlights, before fleeing the scene.
Later on in the week, officers learned the names of the suspect and a female passenger in the stolen car. Police say the passenger had a history with stolen vehicles and selling drugs, so they set up a drug buy at Vic West. The woman showed up, and then ran off with officers chasing after her.
She led them straight to an apartment building in the 400-block of Catherine Street. When the police got into the suite, they found the woman and the suspected driver hiding under the blankets in the bedroom.
The woman was released but investigations are ongoing to determine her involvement with the stolen vehicle, which was located later in the day and is undergoing forensic analysis.
Christopher Spinney, of Saanich, has been charged with possession of stolen property, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police and failing to stop at an accident.
