Firefighters made a grisly discovery while sifting through the charred remains of a Vancouver home yesterday.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Capt. Gabe Roder confirmed that the body of an unidentified man was found on the second floor of a home that burst into flame Sunday morning.

Roder said the blaze, at 795 W. 23rd Ave., was extremely difficult to handle because the home was practically bursting at the seams with clutter.

“With all of the extra items in the house and the attic as well, plus the fire, we were denied the mobility to gain access to this home,” Roder said. “We had to take a defensive stance and battle the fire from the outside.”

The City of Vancouver issued a statement, saying inspectors deemed the house to be vacant in 2005 and believed it to be unoccupied since.

It’s not clear if anyone was squatting in the house at the time the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but is not deemed suspicious.

The B.C. Coroner’s Service removed the body yesterday afternoon and is attempting to identify the victim.
