Metro/Morgan Modjeski 57 Saskatchewan residents are recognized for their contributions to the province and country by being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, Vaughn Solomon Schofield was in Saskatoon Wednesday to award 57 recipients with The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Schofield awarded 29 people the medal during an afternoon ceremony at the Delta Bessborough and awarded 28 more people the medal with, Saskatchewan’s Central Services Minister Nancy Heppner later that evening.

According to the Governor General of Canada’s website, the medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the Queen’s 60th anniversary on the throne.

The medal honours the Queen’s service to Canada and at the same time, honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

Roughly 60,000 Canadians will be awarded the medal throughout the celebration year.
