Some transit riders will face longer walks to the bus stop and fewer buses when they get there if OC Transpo proposals go ahead to combine or shorten some routes and pull others off the road during non-peak hours.
Transpo’s 2011 Business Plan, presented to the city’s interim transit commission yesterday, included a long list of bus routes under review.
Currently, 98.6 per cent of urban households have a five-minute walk to a bus stop and 99.9 per cent are within a 10-minute walk. After route changes, 95 per cent would be within five minutes of a stop during peak periods, and within 10 minutes off-peak.
The changes are aimed at saving $6.5 million in 2011 and $19.5 million in 2012 and beyond.
OC Transpo general manager Alain Mercier said the vast majority of riders won’t notice the difference.
“Over 90 per cent of our riders take those routes that we’re not going to change, or will actually look at improving service,” he said.
