A cyclist is in critical condition in hospital and a driver is in police custody after a crash near a parking lot on Carling Avenue on Thursday at about 2:20 p.m.

Police said they received a call about an impaired driver at the Hampton Park Plaza. A police source said that as officers were arriving to investigate they saw the driver collide with the cyclist. Reports last night said a man in his mid-20s was taken into custody.

Witnesses reported the vehicle pulled out of the parking lot on Carling Avenue near Archibald Street, collided with a few other vehicles and then hit a cyclist, police said, adding they received the call for help at 2:13 p.m.

Paramedics treated the 31-year-old male cyclist for a life-threatening head injury.

En route to hospital, the victim suffered a seizure and he was still unconscious by the time they arrived.

As of press time no charges had been laid.
