An OC Transpo bus traveling westbound on the 417 near Eagleson caught on fire Tuesday morning, Ottawa Fire Services said.
Ottawa Fire spokesperson Marc Messier said he received a call at 7:27 a.m. and smoke was reported inside the passenger compartment.
No passengers were on board and the driver got out safely and waited for emergency crews to arrive, he said.
The fire caused damage mostly to the engine compartment in the rear of the bus.
A Twitter user sent Metro a picture of the fire, which showed heavy black smoke spewing from the rear of the bus as it sat parked on the shoulder.
“An investigation will be initiated to identify the cause of the fire and appropriate measures will follow,” said Alain Mercier, OC Transpo general manager in a news release.
Ontario Provincial Police attended the scene but did issue any road closures.
