Drastic scheduling changes announced on Tuesday by Rogers Media Inc. means job losses for Halifax’s only news radio station, including the end of Maritime Morning with Jordi Morgan.
Morgan has hosted the morning talk show – which aired weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and noon – for the past three years.
Tuesday’s updated schedule shows Maritime Morning has been replaced with the Rick Howe Show.
In a press release, News 95.7’s parent company Rogers introduced the changes by announcing it was partnering with Sportsnet 590 to introduce more sports programming.
“The changes to our schedule allow us to engage with audiences through a broader range of topics that matter, locally, nationally, and internationally,” said regional manager Danny Kingsbury in the release.
“And partnering with a strong all-sports brand like Sportsnet to bring the country’s leading sports radio shows is sure to bring new energy to the Halifax market.”
But according to sources, the scheduling change means a dozen fewer jobs for local staffers.
Laid off employees reportedly include sports anchor Scott MacIntosh, morning anchor Erica Munn, Lite 92.9 drive jock Jamie Patterson, morning news editor Connie Thiessen, producer Melissa Mancini, reporter Desiree Finhert, reporter Amanda Debison and at least three creative and sales staff.
These cuts come as other media outlets reported widespread layoffs by News 95.7’s parent company, Rogers Media Inc.
The Globe and Mail reported the communications giant laid off 94 workers across the country Tuesday.
The station’s new programming will take effect starting Wednesday.
