A well-known Halifax entrepreneur has thrown his hat in the ring to be the next mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality.
Fred Connors, who operates the FRED art gallery, salon and café on Agricola Street, announced his candidacy during his acceptance speech for the Family SOS Ambassador Award at the Courage to Give Back Awards at the Cunard Centre on Thursday night.
The website fredconnorsforhrm.tumblr.com has already been started and includes a bio of Connors, who is no stranger to municipal issues, including his fight to allow chickens in Halifax backyards.
Jennifer O’Connor, the campaign manager for Connors, said on Thursday night he wasn’t available for an interview until Friday. She wouldn’t comment on the reasons for his decision to run, but Connors told CTV news after the awards ceremony he’s looking to “get some real change happening in Halifax.”
“I’ve been involved in my community for a very long time and I care
very passionately about the community that I live in and HRM as a whole,”
he told CTV.
