Target has put the bull’s-eye on Bedford Place Mall and Mic Mac Mall to be among the first stores they will be opening in Canada.
Target Corp. announced Thursday the first 105 locations that it will take over from current Zellers leaeses, and it includes two for Nova Scotia.
“It’s going to be great for the shopping centre,” Mic Mac Mall general manager Terry Harvie said Thursday after learning the news. “We kind of figured this would be one of them, because (the Zellers is) one of the higher volume stores in Atlantic Canada. It’s going to be fabulous.”
A company release says the “vast majority” of the 105 stores listed will become Target locations, as they still must secure construction approval for what will be “extensive renovations.”
The Targets will open across Canada in early 2013. A second set of store openings will be announced in September.
“I’ve shopped here (at Zellers) for so many years and I don’t know what Target is going to be like. It’s hard to tell,” Nancy Eisan said outside the Zellers at MIc Mac Mall on Thursday.
“I’ll miss it but I’m sure I’ll shop here if it’s a Target.”
Target announced in January it was spending $1.83 billion to take over the leases of as many as 220 Zellers stores across Canada from its owner, the Hudson’s Bay Company.
