The Canadian government has unveiled a historical plaque commemorating the 80-year-old ice-skate maker Starr Manufacturing Co.
Peter Kent, Canada’s environment minister, and several others were on hand in Dartmouth yesterday for the unveiling event, a news release says.
The Dartmouth-based company’s ACME Spring Skate, patented in the 1860s, is regarded as the most important 19th-century advancement in skate design.
“This innovation helped to establish ice-skating and hockey as two of Canada’s favourite winter recreations,” said Kent in a statement.
Since the 1930s, Starr has been considered one of the top ice-skate manufacturers in the world, the release said.
The statement also said the company took up manufacturing hockey sticks based on hand-carved sticks by Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia.
