Metro/Laurie Callsen 10-week-old Northern Fur Seal pup Nika splashes at Arctic Shores Wednesday.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo’s newest bundle of joy is making quite a splash as she is welcomed into the public eye.

Edmonton media were invited to meet Nika, the 10-week-old Northern Fur Seal pup, Wednesday as she frolicked in the seal pool at Arctic Shores.

Dr. Milton Ness, the zoo veterinarian, said Nika’s birth not only added diversity to the zoo but also another way to tell people how humans impact the environment and animal ecosystems, especially in Northern Canada.

“Anytime we have the ability to see an animal up close and personal… I think it gets people engaged and they think about what they need to do themselves to change the world, to allow these (animals) to exist,” Ness said.

Nika, who was born July 20, was conceived before her mother Misha moved to the Edmonton Valley Zoo in March 2012. Arctic Shores is also home to Fur Seals Isadora and Sofia, along with Harbor Seals Hula and Makani.
