A man is dead after the ultralight airplane he was piloting crashed on his private airfield north of Lloydminster Monday.

Kitscoty RCMP said the pilot, whose name will not be released, was last seen on Sunday performing touch-and-go take offs and landings north of the city.

The cause of the crash is unknown, but RCMP said the victim was an experienced pilot who was not known to have experience with ultralight aircraft.

Rescue Services from Lloydminster helped locate the crash due to the challenging terrain in the area.

Officials from Transport Canada are investigating. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week to determine cause of death.
