ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A dump in St. John’s, Newfoundland has been closed while it undergoes tests for contaminated material.
A company alerted Robin Hood Bay Dump that some of the materials delivered from a demolition site could be harmful.
The landfill was shut down around 11 p.m. Friday and will remain closed for the rest of today.
The city’s director of public works Paul MacKey says the dump’s equipment will be sterilized by an experienced contractor through a process of steaming, vacuuming and replacing filters.
Mackey says the same process is used for asbestos decontamination.
He says officials will await test results before reopening the facility.
