GLOVERTON, N.L. – Searchers in Newfoundland have found a shoe that belongs to a kayaker reported missing Tuesday night after his boat capsized while going over a small waterfall near Gloverton.
RCMP say the 22-year-old from Gloverton was paddling on the Terra Nova River with a friend when his boat flipped at Old Mill Falls.
Police say the kayaker emerged from the water, but disappeared when he tried to retrieve his kayak from an eddy around the falls.
The second kayaker managed to negotiate the drop without incident.
The missing man’s kayak was later found pinned beneath the falls.
Among those searching for the man are local firefighters, two ground search and rescue teams, the RCMP, federal Fisheries Department staff and a swift-water rescue team from nearby Terra Nova National Park.
As well, the Canadian Coast Guard has searched the harbour where the river enters the ocean, which is where the shoe was found.
