One of Calgary’s largest charity groups is in jeopardy of falling drastically short of its fundraising targets.

The Sally Ann’s Kettle campaign had raised $294,000 by its last count Dec. 7., down roughly $10,000 from the same point in previous years. The Toy Angels campaign has also seen donations drop paired with increased demand.

Salvation Army spokeswoman Pam Goodyear outlined several factors contributing to the shortfall, including fewer volunteers, delays in getting into shops and few shoppers due to the recent deep freeze.

“All around it’s been a challenging year,” Goodyear said.

The red Kettle campaign pays for Christmas baskets of food and gifts for needy families. There are about 70 locations throughout the city, although Goodyear says some stations aren’t always being staffed due to a lack of volunteers.

Additionally, Salvation Army staff urge Calgarians to contribute to the Toy Angels program by dropping off new toys at Calgary Police Service stations. Demand has surged by nearly 100 families this year.

Despite the sluggish start, Goodyear was optimistic things are turning around.

“Typically the last few weeks of your campaign do better than the earlier weeks,” she said. “We’re hoping that people will be out shopping and be in a generous mood to give.”
