A car tax for Calgary drivers may only emerge if the province fails to vacate their portion of the property tax, the city’s intergovernmental affairs committee heard Thursday.
A report detailing possible areas of further taxation for Calgary residents, including a $30 personal vehicle levy and the installation of a land transfer tax which could bring $108 million into city coffers, administration said, adding work still needs to be done to determine whether any of the suggestions would be a “proper fit for Calgary.”
Mayor Dave Bronconnier cautioned that the details in the report were “only scenarios, not our preference,” and said similar types of “environmental surveys” were in the lead up to Municipal Sustainability Initiative funding announcements by the province where the argument was laid out that “if you don’t want to pay, we have these options.”
Bronconnier said the city would continue to push the province to vacate its part of the city’s property taxes, which he pegs at nearly 50 per cent.
