A new airline is flying into Calgary.

Dutch carrier KLM announced it will offer five direct flights a week between Calgary and Amsterdam, where the acts as a hub for many other worldwide destinations according to Calgary Airport Authority president Garth Atkinson.

"With our service to Amsterdam you can get to hundreds of different destinations in the Middle East, Europe and beyond, so it’s a fantastic new access to the planet for Calgarians," he said.

The airline industry worldwide has been suffering from the current economic climate, but KLM is looking to the future said partner airline, Delta.

"I think because of the strength of the economy here in Calgary and the continued growth of this region, that is really the true reason why KLM has chosen Calgary," said Delta spokesperson Nick DeMarco.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier sees KLM’s announcement as a good sign for the city.

"I think this speaks volumes to the Calgary economy, when you look at this is the only new route that KLM is announcing. That of course speaks to the energy industry, it speaks to the business travellers and it speaks to the leisure traveller," Bronconnier said.
