The homeowner suspects the fire started here, at the back of the home, where most of the ceiling was destroyed.

Looking at the roofless structure of char-stained peach walls, homeowner Angela Casale couldn’t contain tears as she remembered Tuesday night’s fire.

Flames destroyed her Ramsey home on Alberta Avenue SE despite an aggressive interior attack by fire crews, who were still putting out hot-spots at 10 a.m. yesterday.

”It was 10 feet high in flames,” said Casale, who lives across the street but owns the home as a rental property. “Flames were curling around the house.  It was like the flames were hugging it.”

When fire crews arrived at the house shortly after 11 p.m., the home was fully engulfed in flames, said fire department spokesperson Brian McAsey.

A mother and son who lived in the basement suite of the home had already escaped when fire crews arrived, but a search began for two upstairs tenants.

”I kept calling and calling,” remembered Casale.  It wasn’t until they came home from a night out that Casale got confirmation that everyone had survived the fire.

The fire department is still investigating the cause of the fire and  estimates damage at $750,000.

“From what I saw, I don’t think anything is salvageable,” said McAsey.  He also said neither the upstairs or basement tenants had insurance and have been left with only the clothes on their back.

McAsey urges renters to take out tenants’ insurance to help them get back on their feet after incidents like this.
