The day after a stunning election victory, mayor-elect Naheed Nenshi laid out his four main priorities for Calgary.
The first item on Nenshi’s list is the 2011 budget. “We’ve got to close the $60 million deficit in a way that doesn’t cut essential services to Calgarians, but keeps taxes reasonable,” he said.
Next is the plan for the airport tunnel. “It’s very clear that Calgarians have spoken out strongly, strongly in support of this project and we’re going to get it done,” he said.
Third on the list is getting the southeast LRT underway, and finally, creating a more transparent city hall.
“We owe it to Calgarians to start showing them real, concrete, visible changes in how city council and city hall do our business,” he said
“I suggest, look out, there are some big changes coming very quickly.”
Before any of those issues can be tackled, however, Nenshi said council must come together.
“Now what we have to do is we have to begin the job of building a team … building a team within city council and building a great team among the 14,000 people who work here at the city.”
