City council will receive advice next week on how much they should be pocketing, leaving some members of council questioning whether it’s open for discussion.
After several meetings, the Council Compensation Review Committee ‘ an independent group of Calgarians ‘ will present their suggestions on pay for aldermen and the mayor to council on Monday.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi said council owes it to citizens to have an open discussion about their pay.
“I don’t think that council should ever complete abdicate it’s responsibilities to an independent commission but we did set up this group of citizens to look at the problem,” he said.
Ald. Richard Pootmans said he has no doubt there will be debate over the subject, but questions whether council should have a say in their own pay.
“If we’re going to ask people to provide us this advice, it’s incumbent for us to listen to it.”
