Fire crews responded to a call in the downtown core Wednesday after reports of used cooking oil being dumped.

Around 10 a.m., the Calgary Fire Department was called to an area near 7 Ave and Centre St South.

Upon arrival, they found an empty 200 gallon container that is used for the collection of used cooking oil.

According to the CFD, reports indicated the container had been emptied earlier in the morning by an oil collection company.

A large quantity of oil covered a downtown parking lot, and some oil had entered the sewer system; however, the CFD says it doesn’t appear as though oil entered the waterway.

The CFD Haz Mat crews, as well as Alberta Environment remained on scene Wednesday afternoon.
