Two giant pandas, like these two, could be loaned to Canada from China should Prime Minister Stephen Harper finalize negotiations during his trip to Beijing this week.

Canada’s prime minister is reportedly on the cusp of securing a deal that would see pandas en route from China but local officials aren’t getting their hopes up.

It was reported in late 2010 that two giant pandas would be loaned to Canada for at least 15 years, making their way to three zoos, including Calgary’s.

Laurie Skene, spokesperson for the zoo, said they are waiting for an official announcement.

“I know that it’s been something that people have certainly been working on but it’s taken time so we won’t get excited until they finalize it,” she said. “There’s been a few trips in the meantime by people in Ottawa and nothing has happened so I think we’ll wait and see.”

Skene said they haven’t begun plans to renovate or possibly build a new facility and will wait for the green light before engaging in discussions with Chinese officials on the requirements to facilitate the pandas.

Tourism Calgary CEO and president Randy Williams said that they, too, are monitoring the situation with hopes of a positive outcome.

“If it happened in 2012, then the zoo would have two new attractions with the penguins and the pandas,” he said. “We’re keeping an eye on it.”
