Pandas, like the one seen here in a Chinese preservation area, will be coming to Calgary after a deal was finalized with China.

Canada and China appear to have come to an agreement that would see two giant pandas on loan for 10 years but it could still be a long wait for Calgarians.

While the details have yet to be finalized, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, the Chinese government has agreed to loan the pair of pandas to the Toronto and Calgary zoos.

Calgary Zoo spokesperson Laurie Skene said after two years of negotiations, the planning can soon get underway.

“At this point, we don’t know where they’re going first,” she said. “If they go to Toronto first, we’re six or seven years before they’re coming to Calgary, so we’d have lots of time.”

Avid zoo-goer and animal lover Jordan Wood, 12, said she was thrilled to hear the pandas will be making a home in Calgary.

“I really like going to the zoo and every time there’s a new animal I think it’s cool to go and watch them.”
