Jessica Sadlo will officially unlock the door to a new home early in the new year after sticking it out for months with a branch of the Occupy Calgary movement.

It will be a new year filled with new beginnings for members of Calgary’s original Occupy camp.

Housing placements have now been found for 15 homeless members of the movement, many of whom settled on St. Patrick’s Island for weeks starting in early October and eventually moved into the residence rented by camp founder Paul Hughes.

For occupier Jessica Sadlo, unlocking the door to a new home will prove to be a pivotal step in reuniting her with her 21-month-old son.

“Getting him back is essential,” said Sadlo who has lived on the streets off and on for five years.

“Everyone has been so great with helping me get my life back on track.”

Justin Mitchell, the last of the Occupy members awaiting a placement, got a formal confirmation call Wednesday morning and cheerfully bounded out of town to spend the holidays with family.

“I am absolutely shocked and amazed,” he said.

Ironically, Hughes’ persistent efforts to not only shelter his homeless peers but also get them into assistance programs may cost him his own residence.

Landlord Peter Thai has previously said he plans to evict the outspoken activist regardless of how quickly the homeless were moved off his property.

But Ald. Gian-Carlo Carra visited the residence Wednesday and said he found few issues.

“The house is spotless, everyone was taking care of it,” he said. “I think it’s a really good, happy ending to a Calgary Occupy story.”
