It’s not often the prize to winning a contest is hiking three mountains in one week, but that’s exactly the opportunity presented to Calgarian Rick Chin.
The Banff National Park Big Mountain Challenge asked prospective participants to submit a photo of themselves with a caption explaining how they were preparing to climb a mountain.
“My caption was “By singing show tunes to keep the bears away,” said Chin with a laugh.
Chin was selected from more than 700 entries as having the best photo and caption and won a stay in Banff and Lake Louise, as well as the chance to win $25,000 for a charity of his choice by hiking Mount Temple, Sulphur Mountain, and Cascade Mountain during his stay in the Banff area.
He is now in the process of raising $5,000, which will be matched by Banff Lake Louise Tourism, and donated to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
“I work in kidney and chronic disease research at the University of Calgary,” he said. “Over time, I’ve come to understand how serious it is.”
As an avid hiker, Chin said he’s confident he’ll make it through the hikes.
“I love to hike, and when I found out it was for charity, there was a definite appeal.”
