Battling breast cancer the first time was hard enough, but when Hayley Rushford’s mother Loretta was diagnosed again, she knew she had to do something to lift her spirits.

Rushford has started an online campaign she’s dubbed #ProjectLoretta, asking everyone to send a message to her mom’s musical idol Keith Urban.

After her mom was diagnosed again in June after 18 years in remission, Rushford started secretly soliciting video submissions from family members and friends.

The result is a more than 20-minute-long video plea, which her mom has no idea about, asking Urban to send a message or even meet Loretta in person.

“Our goal is to get #ProjectLoretta trending on Twitter,” said Rushford.

She said she and her mom first fell in love with Urban’s music when Rushford was in junior high. Now 19, Rushford said the pair have gone to more than half-a-dozen concerts and have met all the members of his band, except for Urban.

“It kind of became our thing,” said Rushford, adding her mom recently brought up the country star over diner saying, “I can’t die yet. I haven’t met Keith Urban.”

Since starting the campaign earlier this week, Rushford said she’s been encouraged by the amount of support from the hundreds of people tweeting and retweeting #ProjectLoretta.

“(My mom) has no idea how many people are behind her,” she said. “It’s been quite overwhelming.”
