Despite Edmonton’s decision to fork over cash for a new NHL arena and the Flames citing their own facility plans, city aldermen say taxpayers dollars are not likely to be handed out in Calgary.
Following the City of Edmonton approving a funding framework of an initial $125 million for a new Oilers arena, Calgary Flames president and CEO Ken King issued a statement.
“We are working very hard to come forward with our own facility plans that will add an important dimension to our city and provide our team with the stability and innovation required to succeed as a major league team in an important Canadian hockey market.”
Ald. Gord Lowe said the City of Edmonton can choose to spend their money how they like, but added, “This alderman has exactly no interest. None whatsoever.”
Saddledome Foundation board member and fellow alderman Ray Jones said the city’s funding is already stretched thin.
“I honestly can’t see city council putting up money,” he said.
Flames fan Rick Bodkin said he would gladly see his tax dollars go towards a new arena.
“It’s not just about hockey; it’s a significant revenue generator for the city, as well,” he said. “We have one of the older buildings in the National Hockey League, so it’s something that has to be looked at some point.”
