Martin Parnell was among 24 volunteers taking part in a 61-hour attempt this weekend to break the Guinness World Record for the longest netball game at the South Fish Creek Recreation Complex.

After more than 3,000 points scored, an attempt to set the record for the world’s longest netball game was drawing to a close yesterday.

The game, spearheaded by Martin Parnell of Cochrane, began on Friday and, after 61 hours, drew to a close this morning at 6:30 a.m.

Parnell is no stranger to endurance, having run 250 marathons last year to raise more than $250,000 for Right to Play. But he said this feat presented unique challenges.

“It’s very different,” he said. “A lot of the tricks I learned through running in the ultra (marathon), I’ve definitely used here.”

Fellow participant Lawrence Mafuru has been a guide on Mount Kilimanjaro and plans to set the record for the fastest climb up the Tanzanian mountain in 2013.

Even after climbing Kilimanjaro more than 50 times, Mafuru said playing in the world’s longest netball game is arduous.

“It’s a challenge, but it’s fun.”
