Designer Rob Avis of Verge Permaculture says he hopes the Mustard Seed rooftop garden inspires guests to grow their own vegetables.

The Mustard Seed is sprouting new life in the midst of the concrete jungle with the introduction of a rooftop garden.

Volunteers braved the rain to begin installing the garden, which will ultimately be used to provide produce for guests at the Seed.

“It’s a dream realized,” said Tammy Winterfield, the staff member who came up with the idea.

Co-worker Deb Runnalls said the space will go toward honouring the Seed’s vision of creating a community.

“The rooftop garden was an opportunity for us to have a place in the middle of the city, where staff and guests could come together and really have that community and enjoy a space that was away from that urban world.”

One of the designers of the space, Rob Avis of Verge Permaculture, said he hopes the space instills a love of gardening and that guests are able to grow their own food once they move on from the Mustard Seed.

“I always say all the world’s problems can be solved in the garden.”
