For the past two weeks, Calgary Transit has been giving a free pass to Calgarians who failed to purchase a C-Train ticket, as long as they fill out a survey.
In an effort to understand why some Calgarians fork over for their fare and others don’t, Brian Whitelaw, co-ordinator of public safety and enforcement, said the transit authority spent the past two weeks surveying users.
Those who are unable to present a ticket have two options: Take the survey or pay the fine.
While fare-evaders throughout the city are rejoicing, those who pay for transit on a daily basis are less than impressed.
“I have to pay when I get on, so other people who get a free ride really annoy me,” said Robert Dennis, who uses transit as his main mode of transportation.
Melissa Fulin agreed that letting some people off is unfair.
“There was a time in the past when I didn’t have a ticket for the train ‘ I lost my ticket ‘ and I got a $150 fine. So I think it should be the same for everyone.”
However, Whitelaw said there are still uniformed peace officers patrolling the trains and issuing fines.
“If they get caught by the folks doing the study, that will be their lucky day if they choose to take the survey.”
