Steve-O is one of the stars of Jackass – a TV show with stunts and pranks turned into a movie series. He’s currently in Calgary on his Entirely Too Much Information tour performing at the Laugh Shop Friday and Saturday.
Welcome to Calgary! Is this your first time?
It’s not my first time, no. I did a show here on New Year’s Eve of 2003, which got cut short as we fled the venue, running from police. I was so wasted at the time; I can’t even remember what it was that me and my crew had done. I’m happy to say that this time I’m in a much better place.
Seems like you’ve been pretty busy lately. Tell me about the comedy tour you’re currently on.
I’ve been on tour since last November, and it’s been non-stop. My comedy is definitely not for kids, but what’s probably most interesting about it is that every experience I speak of onstage really happened. And that’s embarrassing for me to admit.
How does performing on stage differ from what you do with the Jackass team?
The standup comedy element of my show provides a real behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of Jackass and I go straight into a whole set of stunts and tricks after that part. It’s really a variety show and I desperately need a fire extinguisher to be on hand, just in case.
Do you prefer being on stage or behind the cameras making movies?
I was born with what I refer to as “an unreasonable hunger for the attention of others.” As long as I’m performing, I’m always a happy guy.
Of all the stunts you’ve done over the years, is there one you wish you could take back?
I wish I would have done more, that’s all.
What’s one thing you think people would be surprised to know about you?
I grew up in five different countries and spoke three different languages by the age of three – two of which I forgot by the time I turned five.
You recently celebrated three years of sobriety. Congrats! How have things changed for you in those three years?
Thank you. My life is so different today, I don’t know exactly where to begin. I think the only thing that hasn’t changed about me is my sense of humour and my unreasonable hunger for the attention of others. Today, I am a 100 per cent vegan, caffeine-free, non-smoker and animal rights activist.
