In the wake of Subway’s growth in the ’90s, various sandwich places sprang up. Badass Jack’s opened in Edmonton in ’97 and has expanded to 16 locations across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The chain set itself apart with a distinctive titular mascot (with a fully-developed back story), but relied on serving great, overstuffed wraps. It has since branched into grilled wraps and rice/noodle bowls.

The wrap itself is still terrific. My soft cheddar tortilla was plump with veggies, roast beef and a delicious pineapple curry sauce ($7.49). My wife was delighted with her own butter chicken-sauced chicken wrap on whole wheat. Peering up at the image of Badass Jack himself crashing through the ceiling on his motorcycle, I chased each bite with Brisk lemonade ($2.09).

Sometimes, you just need a quick bite before heading back to work. Jack’s serves up some fresh, tasty options quickly and, well, with a double-serving of mascot attitude.
