The fried chicken was good but for the less adventurous.

Caribbean cuisine finally arrived on Whyte Avenue.

Irie Foods offers Jerk Chicken, Oxtail Soup and Roti on demand – along with Jamaican sodas. With such offerings, the little Millwoods restaurant proves it is  grown up.

Puzzled at its inclusion among the Jamaican dishes, I ordered the fried chicken ($16) and was treated to two tender pieces on a bed of rice and kidney beans.

The mild, healthy combination complemented the chicken’s crisp, delicious skin in the rather conventional dish.

My bride’s jerk chicken ($16) was fantastic, however, with its crisped skin concealing surprising flavour and heat. She graciously shared some with me – I’m a lucky man.

We washed these down with pineapple twistas ($7.49) – our rich milky drinks served in hollowed-out pineapples.

I’m definitely coming back for the sweet akee fruit and salt cod national dish, and I know that most of Whyte Ave will be in there with me for a taste of the Caribbean.
