One of my favourite restaurants in Ottawa is Murray Street Kitchen, where nose-to-tail, farm-to-table and locally sourced foods are the refrains. Now, the chefs from Murray Street have opened a general store and take-out shop just around the corner from their kitchen.
The wood planks and blackboards give this market old-fashioned charm. While you wait for your order, you can pick up fresh produce, homemade granola, artisan cheese, local milk and a glass of strawberry-steeped water from a glass beverage dispenser.
My feeding frenzy began with a unique “Charcutercone”, a paper cone filled with salami, sausage, prosciutto and crispy chicken skin. I also ordered a pulled pork sandwich. The tender, sweet and saucy pork was served with spring onions and lettuce inside a fresh poppy seed crusted roll. On the side, I had the potato salad, cooked al dente with chunks of smoky sausage.
Murray’s Market is charming, but best of all satisfying.
