If someone told you a circus featuring 52 world-class acrobats, musicians and singers was coming to town, and that some of the acts had titles like aerial hoops and aerial contortion in silk, you’d be correct if you guessed that it was Cirque du Soleil.
Quidam is the latest awe-inspiring production from the internationally acclaimed Montreal-based troupe.
Here’s how the troupe’s new arena show is described on its website: “Quidam: a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner, a person rushing past and swallowed by the crowd. It could be anyone, anybody. Someone coming or going at the heart of our anonymous society. A member of the crowd, one of the silent majority. The one who cries out, sings and dreams within us all. This is the ‘quidam’ whom this show allows to speak.”
And, Quidam speaks with an array of fabulous tricks and stunts of extreme physical courage and finesse. Interestingly, this show is more sombre than its past productions but is mesmerizing nonetheless.
In a review of Quidam, the San Diego Union-Tribune raved that some of the feats “are a reminder that the true magic of a circus lies in its power to dazzle — not so much with high-tech effects and slick sets, but with the drama of the body pushed to awe-inspiring extremes. (And with humour as the ideal leavening.)”
Quidam will be staged at Scotiabank Place June 22 to 30. For show and ticket information, please visit cirquedusoleil.com/quidam.
